Get it wrong to get it right!
Ignorance is bliss but central to healthy learning and progression is the acceptance of mistakes and discomfort. With this in mind, we teach children to understand the learning process and revel in the conscious incompetence, creating an environment in which we embrace mistakes and ask searching questions.
Another key aspect here is assessing a child’s place upon the scale with a given topic. Over exuberant direction given to children who are unconsciously competent can be counter productive and push them back into the conscious competence stage.
Don’t be afraid to print this out and put it on the fridge at home, talk it through with your little one and encourage them to be happy that they are, firstly, conscious of their incompetence, it is the first step towards progress!
